Christian Dior was born on January 21, 1905 in the small town of Granville, in Normandy. He moved with his parents in 1910 in Paris, where he made his studies and dream of becoming architect spent a happy and easy childhood. But his parents predestine it for a diplomatic career and push him to enroll in the school of Political Sciences, he will leave finally in 1926 without a degree. Attending cultural and artistic circles Parisians, he befriended with some creators of the roaring twenties, as the poets Max Jacob and Jean Cocteau. Then, decide to open a gallery for contemporary art with Jacques Bonjean, his friend and financial partner. They expose works by Chirico, Utrillo, Braque, Fernand Léger and Christian Bérard. Passionate about fashion and design, he began in 1935 – back from military service – for sale some sketches in Parisian couture houses and the magazine “Le Figaro”. His talent attracts attention and interested designers: Robert Piguet hiring as a designer in 1938 and Lucien Lelong engage it in 1941. In 1946, the King of textile Marcel Boussac decided to finance the own Christian Dior fashion house: he bought the bel Hôtel particulier of the 30, avenue Montaigne to install the House Christian Dior.
On February 12, 1947, he introduced his first collection. This is a triumph, a new style was born: the ‘New Look’. Her famous dress “corolle” fascinates and its avant-garde design triumph: the size is constricted, chest high and round, narrow shoulders and discovered about 30 cm legs. A new style was born, sui sublime woman in a dark period of the after war.
In this burst of creativity, he decides to open a new Department devoted to fur, then launches its first “Miss Dior” perfume. He receives the prestigious Neiman Marcus Award, opens a sign in New York and signed as early as 1948, the first licences in the history of sewing. Christian Dior is the first to combine creation and communication: each of his shows is accompanied by a booklet summarising the collection and for journalists.
The Dior House is so well known. Its founder sees his creations worn by personalities such as the Duchess of Windsor, and the icons of beauty as Marlène Dietrich, Rita Hayworth, Ava Gardner, or Eva Peron.
Nine years later, in 1957, the grand couturier, fashion engineering makes the “Time Magazine”. He died soon after, at the age of 52 years, in Italy, following a heart attack. And leaves the world orphan fashion to one of its most adventurous designers.
Today, the villa “Les Rhumbs” in Granville, where grew up Christian Dior, became a museum dedicated to the designer.
